Editor's Dispatch
Dropping into Kern Valley requires respect and a firm grasp of mountain flying fundamentals. Deep in a canyon in the Southern Sierra Nevada, the approach means managing winds that flow down-canyon from the north in the morning and reverse to flow up-canyon from the south by the afternoon. You are aiming for a 3,500-by-50-foot strip of asphalt operating strictly from dawn to dusk. There is no runway lighting, no instrument procedure, and a strict west-side-only traffic pattern to keep your wingtips out of the steep eastern slopes. It is high-complexity VFR work, but when the tires touch the runway, the payoff is immediate.
L05 is the quintessential fly-in camping destination. The airport occupies a prime stretch of dirt directly alongside the Kern River. You can chock the airplane, pitch a tent under the shade trees, and make use of the on-field firepits and outdoor showers. Kernville is the white-water rafting capital of the region, carrying an atmosphere that splits the difference between an Old West outpost and a high-adventure dirtbag hangout. In the winter, before the summer rafting crowds arrive, the town takes on a quieter, more deliberate pace—an ideal time to visit if your sleeping bag is rated for freezing overnight temperatures.
The center of gravity on the field is the Airpark Cafe. Operating Thursday through Monday from seven in the morning until three in the afternoon, it is a genuine pilot institution. You land, park at the transient tiedowns, and walk roughly zero minutes to a plate of pancakes or a heavy breakfast burrito. It is unpretentious, high-calorie comfort food served with a front-row view of mountain traffic working the pattern.
Because Kern Valley is built for an overnight stay, you will want to borrow the free courtesy car and make the three-mile drive into town for dinner. Kern River Brewing Company is the anchor here, pouring their award-winning Just Outstanding IPA alongside massive Class V burgers and waffle fries. If you prefer a more formal end to the day, Ewing’s on the Kern serves prime rib on a cliffside patio perched directly over the river rapids.
Kern Valley earns its reputation by getting the fundamentals of a pilot getaway exactly right. It combines demanding, rewarding flying with immediate access to a heavy-hitting riverside food scene and some of the best on-field camping in the state. Do not push the daylight margins here, and plan your arrival to avoid the worst of the afternoon mechanical turbulence. Bring a tent, top off the tanks with heavily discounted 100LL, and enjoy an airport that treats general aviation as the main event.
