Editor's Dispatch
Dropping out of the sky over the Georgia coastline puts you right into a hive of activity. McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport shares a CTAF with Jekyll Island just five miles south, meaning the frequency is thick with position reports from transient turbines and training aircraft. Keep your head on a swivel and your radio calls precise. If the winds are calm, expect Runway 22. Avoid dragging it in low over the residential areas guarding the thresholds of 16/34—the neighbors are famously intolerant of noisy final approaches. Once you clear the active, the salt marshes and moss-draped live oaks remind you exactly where you are.
St. Simons is the largest of the Golden Isles, a place where upscale resort money coexists with unpretentious Southern hospitality. The pace is unapologetically laid back. The immediate vicinity is easily walkable, but Velocity Aviation keeps a fleet of crew cars and rental options on the ramp, making the island yours to explore. The FBO pumps 100LL at a highly competitive $5.45 a gallon, turning what could be an expensive coastal detour into an easy logistical decision.
The culinary anchor here is Southern Soul Barbeque, a legendary joint operating out of a converted 1940s gas station. It is a 22-minute walk or a three-minute crew car ride from the chocks. Expect lines out the door for their slow-smoked pork, beef brisket, and signature sauces. If you want to stay closer to the field, take the 15-minute walk to Coastal Kitchen at Morningstar Marina for a raw bar and fresh local shrimp with a view of the Frederica River. For a fast turnaround, there is a McDonald's six minutes from the terminal, but settling for a Big Mac when Southern Soul is just down the road borders on pilot error.
This is an island that rewards an overnight stay. Grab a rental car from the FBO and head down to Pier Village to walk off the brisket near the St. Simons Lighthouse. Redfern Village offers excellent dinner options, including Sal’s Neighborhood Pizzeria, run by a former professional boxer serving authentic New York-style slices. The next morning, before heading back to the ramp, secure a table at Palmer's Village Cafe. Their banana pudding pancakes alone justify the hotel bill.
McKinnon earns its reputation as one of the Southeast's finest aviation destinations. Between the inexpensive self-serve fuel and a food scene that hits well above its weight class, the trip easily pays for itself. Mind the radio traffic, respect the noise abatement boundaries, and do not leave without a plate of slow-smoked pork. Arriving in winter means the engine runs cool in the dense coastal air, and the infamous summer humidity has not yet arrived to punish you for dining on the patio.
