Editor's Dispatch
Stinson Municipal operates in the shadow of San Antonio International, standing as the city's primary general aviation reliever and the second-oldest continuously operating GA field in the country. The airspace demands attention. San Antonio approach control funnels heavy iron directly over the field at 2,500 feet MSL, meaning your situational awareness needs to be dialed in long before you call the Stinson tower. Once inside the Class D, you are working with two wide, well-maintained asphalt strips, the longest offering 5,000 feet of pavement. GateOne handles the ramp with straightforward 24-hour self-serve 100LL at $6.20 a gallon, making the logistics of arriving here entirely painless.
You are landing on the historic South Side of San Antonio, a neighborhood where working-class Texas heritage intersects with centuries-old architecture. Stinson sits immediately adjacent to the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and the Mission Reach section of the River Walk. This is not the crowded downtown stretch of the river with overpriced margaritas and narrated boat tours. It is a quiet trail system connecting eighteenth-century Spanish colonial missions. The area wears its history without putting on a show, offering a blend of ancient stone facades and the steady hum of piston singles in the pattern.
You do not even need to leave the property to eat well. A two-minute walk from the transient ramp puts you at Trailblazer Café inside Suite 107 of the main terminal. It is a scratch kitchen turning out excellent burgers and surprisingly good vegan pastries, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows looking right back at the flight line. If you have the time to borrow the GateOne courtesy car, drive a mile north to Nicha's Comida Mexicana. A South Side institution since 1977, this is where you go for legendary breakfast tacos in the morning or fiercely authentic puffy tacos and cheese enchiladas in the afternoon.
Because the local history runs deep, Stinson easily justifies an overnight stay. Rent a car from the on-field Hertz or grab a rideshare to spend an afternoon walking the eight miles of the Mission Reach trails. The proximity to the city core means you can easily transition from a quiet afternoon exploring the missions to an upscale wood-fired prime rib dinner at 1917 Restaurant. If you prefer to keep things casual, B&B Smokehouse is just a ten-minute drive for honest, family-owned Texas brisket and ribs that have been consistently excellent since 1984.
This is a required logbook entry for anyone flying through South Texas. Come for the aviation history, but stay for the South Side culinary staples. Winter is the time to make this run, when the crisp air makes walking the Mission trails a pleasure before the crushing heat returns in June. Do not miss the scratch-made burgers at Trailblazer Café, and if you venture off-field, a plate of puffy tacos at Nicha's is strictly mandatory.
