Editor's Dispatch
When St. George finally abandoned its notoriously constrained hilltop runway in 2011, general aviation inherited a sprawling, 9,300-foot strip of asphalt carved right out of the Mojave Desert. The new St. George Regional Airport (KSGU) offers a massive footprint with RNAV and LDA approaches that make arriving in southwestern Utah exceptionally straightforward. The surrounding terrain is stunning, but it demands respect. Winter operations require attention to the cold temperature airport designation, meaning mandatory altitude corrections on the approach if the mercury dips to minus five Celsius. Keep your head on a swivel on the ground, too; the airfield's curvature creates a known CTAF blind spot between taxiways Alpha 1 and Alpha 5.
This corner of Utah is a high-energy collision of rugged outdoor lifestyle and refined desert wealth. St. George is the primary gateway to Zion National Park, drawing a mix of dirt-stained rock climbers, van-lifers, and luxury vacationers. The red-rock scenery dominates every sightline, contrasting sharply with the manicured golf courses and sprawling developments that have transformed this once-sleepy town into a booming, sun-drenched metropolis.
The real victory for transient pilots is that you don’t have to venture into town to eat well. Located inside the Million Air FBO is the Jet-A-Way Cafe, a genuinely excellent on-field dining setup. Operating Wednesday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch, Chef Jeremy turns out a menu that vastly exceeds standard airport fare. Instead of a microwaved sandwich in a plastic wrapper, you get proper artisan burgers, seared salmon, and a heavily praised Philly cheesesteak. You eat while looking out panoramic windows that frame the runway traffic against a backdrop of jagged crimson cliffs.
If you have the time to borrow a courtesy car or rent a vehicle from the terminal, the dining scene ten miles north in town justifies an overnight stay. The Painted Pony anchors historic Ancestor Square with sophisticated Southwestern plates and a deep wine list, while Wood Ash Rye brings a communal, locally sourced menu to the downtown core. For a meal with a view, Cliffside Restaurant sits on Tech Ridge, offering a phenomenal steak and seafood menu looking down over the entire St. George valley.
St. George proves that a modern regional airport doesn't have to be a sterile transit point. The self-serve 100LL is priced aggressively enough to make this a strategic fuel stop, but the sheer quality of the Jet-A-Way Cafe makes it a destination in its own right. Plan your arrival for a Friday lunch, top off the tanks, and grab the Philly cheesesteak while watching the bizjets roll in. Winter here is typically brilliant and clear, offering a stark, beautiful escape when the northern Rockies are buried in snow, as long as you respect the freezing temperatures on the approach.
