Editor's Dispatch

Flying into Central Oregon means sharing the sky with the jagged peaks of the Cascade Range. Roberts Field sits on the high desert floor at 3,082 feet, offering a pair of massive 7,000-foot runways and enough instrument approaches to get you in no matter the weather. It is a serious piece of infrastructure handling serious traffic. Winter in the high desert brings dense air and biting temperatures—this is a designated cold temperature airport, meaning altitude corrections are mandatory if the thermometer drops below -16 degrees Celsius. Roll up to the newly built Skyservice facility, and they will hand you the keys to a courtesy car.

For decades, Redmond played the working-class, ranching neighbor to the upscale resort town of Bend. That dynamic has shifted. The town has held onto its rugged, old-Oregon heritage while quietly cultivating a sophisticated, locally sourced culinary identity. The downtown core has undergone a massive revitalization, trading empty storefronts for craft breweries and farm-to-table restaurants. It is a dense, walkable grid that offers Bend-quality food without the traffic, the wait lists, or the pretension.

Dining technically starts on the field, but it comes with a caveat. A five-minute walk from the GA ramp to the commercial terminal gets you to Dancing River Marketplace, a reliable 24/7 spot for pre-security coffee and sandwiches. There is a full gastropub, Avalon Aeropub, but it sits post-security—meaning you are out of luck without an airline ticket. The smartest move is taking the FBO courtesy car two miles down the road. Diego’s Spirited Kitchen anchors the local scene with a menu built around dishes like pork osso bucco and arroz con pollo. Feast Food Company runs a strict farm-to-table operation, updating their plates constantly based on what the local agriculture provides. If you want atmosphere with your meal, Grace and Hammer fires gourmet pizzas in a beautifully restored 1912 Presbyterian church.

Roberts Field is an exceptional cross-country detour that rewards pilots who take the time to leave the airport boundary. The terminal food will keep you from starving, but the real reason to land here is the five-minute drive into town. Grab the courtesy car, head for the old church for a wood-fired pie, and enjoy the lack of crowds. Just bundle up before you step out onto the ramp—the winter winds coming off the Cascades will slice right through a light jacket.
