Head to La Vero's Mexican Seafood for shrimp cocteles and bracing aguachile that deliver a sharp kick of coastal flavor on the city's deep-rooted Taco Trail. If you'd rather watch the rigging sway, Sea Fresh Channel Islands plates local boat catches on a patio overlooking the marina, while Immigrant Son Caffe in the downtown grid pulls an exceptional espresso alongside an unapologetically dense breakfast lasagna.

Oxnard earns its spot on the coastal route by offering cheap gas and immediate access to excellent off-field food without the air traffic control headaches of its neighbors. Park at the jet center, top off the tanks with sub-six-dollar 100LL, and grab the keys to a crew car. Winter is the ideal time to make this run, as the colder months reliably strip away the stubborn summer marine layer, leaving the Channel Islands sharply silhouetted against the Pacific horizon on short final. Just don't ask the line crew for directions to the Waypoint Café.
