Editor's Dispatch
Williamsport Regional occupies a wide swath of the Susquehanna River valley, bounded by the rolling hills of central Pennsylvania. The field is overbuilt in the best possible way for general aviation. Energy Aviation handles the ramp, and the 6,825-foot grooved primary runway is served by an ILS and a control tower that operates until late evening. The only real catches are the permanent unlighted crane half a mile southeast of Runway 30 and the local deer population, which treats the runway thresholds as a private crossing.
The global spotlight hits this valley for a few weeks in late summer for the Little League World Series, bringing a rush of crowds and television crews. Outside of that window, Montoursville and neighboring Williamsport revert to their natural state: a quiet, tree-lined expanse of classic Americana. The streets hold the architectural remnants of a booming nineteenth-century lumber industry, but the prevailing attitude today is entirely unpretentious.
You do not need a courtesy car to eat well here. Simply Savor on the Fly Café operates inside the terminal building, a brief three-minute walk from the FBO. The kitchen gets the fundamentals exactly right, serving heavy, home-style lunch specials and fresh-baked cookies in a dining room walled with glass facing the runway. Because their hours hinge somewhat on airline schedules, you might occasionally find the doors locked. The immediate backup plan is a fifteen-minute walk down Airport Road to Broad Street, where Johnson's Cafe has been feeding Montoursville since the 1950s. The menu is massive, the steaks are reliable, and the rotating craft beer list is far better than a small-town diner usually manages.
Williamsport is an ideal midday stop when navigating the Pennsylvania ridges. The on-field dining requires zero logistical friction, and the runway views are unimpeded. If you are crossing the state deep in winter, pay attention to the thermometer. This is a designated cold temperature airport, and any arrival below minus thirteen Celsius means running the altitude correction math before flying the approach. Secure the plane, walk into the heated terminal, and order whatever they just pulled out of the oven.
